A deadly fireworks accident in northwestern Minnesota over the weekend.

The Mahnomen County Sheriff's Department says a 13-year old boy was killed when a firework he was holding went off, shooting through the bottom of the tube it was in and hitting him in the chest just after 11:00 p.m. on July 4.

Deputies responded to a distress call at a home in Naytahwaush where authorities say the teen was not breathing when officers arrived.

Bystanders were giving chest compressions and officers performed life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into what happened continues.
