If you like Prince, you'll want to head down to First Avenue Friday night.

The legendary Dr. Mambo's Combo will be performing Prince's entire Purple Rain album, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the artists' 1983 live debut performance of it at the historic Minneapolis nightclub.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine Editor-in-Chief Jayne Haugen Olson, a big Prince fan, talked with WCCO's Jordana Green.

"Prince was a huge fan of Mambo's Combo, it would not be uncommon to see Prince in the back listening to the band, or he hired different members of the band to work with," says Olson. "The band Mambo's Combo is creating the setlist as it occurred, August (4) of 1983, tonight at First Avenue."

Purple Rain, the movie, was almost entirely shot in the Twin Cities. It was made for just over $7 million, and ended up grossing more than $70 million worldwide.

The film also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.

Celebrating the Live Debut of “Purple Rain” featuring Dr. Mambo's Combo performing the 1983 concert in its entirety, Friday night, doors 7:30 and show at 8:30. It also includes an appearance by The Minnesota Dance Theatre. Ticket information is available here.
