This weekend officially marks the fishing opener, but if you're planning on heading to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, there is a Flood Advisory until Monday. And warnings that high water will be the norm for a bit.
Even though there are no entry points washed out, visitors need to be aware, says Christine Kolinksi with the Superior National Forest.
"Visitors should plan for high water and localized flooding across Cook, Lake and Saint Louis County," Kolinski explains. "Visitors should be prepared for low-lying areas, portages, trails, and some campsites (that) might be flooded or difficult to access."
Flooding this time of year isn't abnormal, but certain areas are currently more affected than others.
"If you're going more on the North Shore, more of those Grand Marais, Tofte areas, up to the Boundary Waters and into the forest around there, that could be wetter than it would say on the more western side of the forest," says Kolinski.
For those doing a multi-day trip into the BWCA, some campsites and trails may be underwater.
"It's not that abnormal. There's been a couple past years where we've had this spring flooding, and, as you know, the Superior National Forest is a water-rich, boreal ecosystem," Kolinski adds. "We have a lot of large lakes, some of them have just recently lost their ice. Or a few might still have a very thin ice layer on them."
Kolinski also said anyone in the area needs to be very careful on the water which is still very cold, and everyone needs to have a life jacket due to those risks. Streams and rivers also have extremely fast water, and dangerous rapids.
She advises visitors to check out the Minnesota DNR website for more information.
