The next President of the University of Minnesota has been selected, as former Hormel Foods CEO Jeff Ettinger has been approved to the position on an interim basis, being that he accepts the offer.
Ettinger, 64, was one of a few outsiders being considered by the board of regents, which inevitably selected him following a 10-1 vote, with one member abstaining.
The now interim president shared that he will work to showcase the accomplishments of the school, which he feels often go unseen.
“I think the public does not fully understand all the great things that are going on at the university,” he said
Ettinger shared that he was the person to fill the position as he felt confident he could restore the U’s reputation with lawmakers and the general public after a year full of criticism.
Nine of the 12 regents appeared to agree with the opinions of Ettinger, naming him their top choice among the field of candidates.
“I just think we’re ready for a very different point of view that embraces the mission, yet brings us something fresh and different that we can build on,” Regent Mary Davenport said.
Ettinger is now set to begin contract negotiations with the university upon his acceptance of the position. He will then take over for current President Joan Gabel, who is leaving to take another job.
