Paul Stagg, a former WCCO announcer and a longtime staple on Willmar radio, has died. He was 83.
In a career spanning over six decades, Stagg (Steigerwald) filled roles in the broadcast industry in every possible role, including every size market, and every type of format.
Stagg began his career in 1957 as a 15-year-old, part-time announcer at KWLM in his home town of Willmar. After stints on WDAY in Fargo, North Dakota and WWTC in the Twin Cities, Stagg began an 18-year run at WCCO Radio and television.
Stagg served various roles with the station, including as a staff announcer, music director and program director, including reading the news and weather. You can still hear Stagg as part of WCCO's Christmas Day programming, reading a story called "Christmas Gifts."
He was the General Manager of WCCO-FM which eventually became WLTE under his supervision. That station is now 102.9 FM, the Wolf which is a country format.
After WCCO, Stagg worked at KLBB in St. Paul before returning to his hometown of Willmar where he worked at KWLM from 2007 until his retirement in 2019. Stagg also owned several smalltown radio stations across Minnesota.
He was a 2017 inductee into the Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
Stagg was always remembered as a true professional, with his baritone, soothing delivery on Minnesota airwaves for decades. Funeral arrangements are still pending.
