It's safe to say that George Floyd's death changed the world. His girlfriend Courtney Ross believes that Floyd, in fact, had a special purpose on this earth.
“I think in the future when people look back at history and reading the history books, Floyd will be seen as a prophet,” Ross told WCCO’s Susie Jones. “The way he thought and the way he treated people was through God and I've never seen that in a human being. And so, you know, he brought God back into my life.”
Ross says she still feels his presence all around her.
“He comes to me in my times of need,” Ross explains. “I pray to him constantly.”
And that prayer is often focused on trying to help change the world. She says she's been discouraged by the lack of progress made on police reform and ending racism.
“I think that's what is so important about people kind of breaking out of their comfort zones and going places and meeting people and learning about what's really going on,” says Ross. “You know, when you cross the street it's a whole other world sometimes.”
Ross knows there will be many events marking his death but she plans to spend part of her day at the Salvation Army which it was an important place for George Floyd. She’ll then spend the evening at Conga in Northeast Minneapolis. It's a bar where George worked for many years.
At the end of Susie Jones’ interview, she asked Ross how she was holding up. Through tears, Ross explained that it’s been very difficult.
“It's hard it's hard. I'm doing really well since Floyd passed. I've been clean. But, um, somedays that's so hard to beat.”
