Governor Tim Walz has activated the National Guard after Judge Peter Cahill dropped a lesser charge against former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin.

The Governor says that he has deployed 100 National Guard soldiers around the Twin Cities along with an undisclosed amount of Minnesota State Highway Patrol officers. Walz says that this is a move out of an abundance of caution.

"In light of developments in the George Floyd case, we’ve taken the precautionary step of asking the Minnesota National Guard to prepare to help ensure safety for Minnesotans. I want to remind Minnesotans that today’s ruling marks a positive step in the path toward justice for George Floyd.”

Earlier Thursday morning, Judge Cahill dismissed the 3rd-degree murder charge against Derek Chauvin. He denied the motion to dismiss the 2nd-degree murder charge against Chauvin along with all other charges against the other officers involved in George Floyd's death.
