Gun control advocates are converging on the state capitol in hopes of bringing change following a summer of gun violence in Minnesota.
"Do not wait for another child to die. Do not wait for another mother to be sitting here again telling you their story of fear, sorrow and grief. Because the mothers, we will keep coming."
It was just the beginning of Monday's emotional testimony on an issue touching everyone's lives these days, as tje State Senate's Gun Violence Prevention Working Group began holding its first hearing.
The bipartisan group will focus on possible gun reform and safety measures that could be discussed in an upcoming special session. DFL State Senator Ron Latz is co-chair and gaveled in the proceedings Monday.
"It is kind of a call to order either way, and from my perspective, a call to action," said Latz. "Which I think most people in this room probably share."
The working group was created last week in reaction to the shooting death of House Speaker emerita Melissa Hortman in June, and the Annunciation Church mass shooting in August.
"I don't think any of us wanted to be here. We're here because of another firearm tragedy in Minnesota. It's been a tough summer," added Latz.
Several proposals were submitted by members of the state senate. The panel is not expected to take any official action.
