A massive $32 million construction project is underway in Minneapolis that'll close or restrict parts of Hennepin Ave. for the next two years.
Work will be done between 26th and Lake this year, and between 26th and Douglas next year.
Hennepin Avenue is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the Twin Cities, carrying tens of thousands of cars and bicycles every day.
The last time Hennepin was upgraded at this scale was more than sixty years ago.
According to a press release from Minneapolis city officials, the project will update Hennepin to meet the public’s current and future needs.
The new, multimodal design improves space for people walking, riding transit, biking and driving.
The layout also provides space for enhanced stations being built for the future METRO E Line, a new Bus Rapid Transit line that will largely replace Route 6 in December 2025.
Metro Transit buses on Hennepin Avenue will be detoured to Lyndale Avenue via Lake Street or 31st Street and 24th Street while the project is underway.
