The Hennepin County Attorney office is addressing the dismissal of charges against a wrongfully convicted man after serving nearly 16 years in prison.
Edgar Barrientos-Quintana was previously charged with murder after a 2008 drive by shooting in Minneapolis that killed 18 year old Jesse Mickleson.
Barrientos-Quintana spoke publicly for the first time since his release.
"You know it's going to happen, the system is so slow, you know," Barrientos-Quintana explained. "It's going to happen even. Even the last three months, you don't want to get your hopes up, pretty much."
Barrientos-Quintana was originally facing a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for a 2008 murder until the states Conviction Review Unit found major flaws in his case.
County Attorney Moriarty says a new division was created by her office to make sure these types of mistakes don't happen in the future.
"With the leadership of this new division, our office hired a national expert in eyewitness identification to conduct a series of trainings for our staff to help ensure this never happens again," Moriarty explains.
Barrientos-Quintana was accused and tried for the killing of a 16-year old in a Minneapolis alley. A jury eventually found him guilty, but missing details uncovered by attorneys with the Innocence Project proved otherwise during a three-year investigation. Attorney Julie Jonas says there was alot that didn't add up.
"All of the witnesses had described the shooter as bald, even shiny-headed bald," Jonas explained. "And he, because he was on the video a half hour before the shooting, we could see that he had a full head of hair and we knew he also couldn't have shaved it in the interim. Because then he was on a separate video later that evening at a party where he still had a full head of hair."
Barrientos-Quintana was released from prison last Wednesday. The Hennepin County Attorney's Office says that they have not heard from Minneapolis police about whether they will reinvestigate the Jesse Mickelson case.
