Hennepin County attorney Mary Moriarty is giving the federal government two weeks to hand over evidence and other information about last month's shooting death of Renee Good by an ICE agent.
In a video posted on social media, Moriarty says she expects the federal government to comply by the February 17 deadline.
“The federal government has been clear that they are not conducting an investigation into the death of Renee Good, but we are,” announced Moriarty in a social media video. “We need these records as part of our ongoing investigation into her death at the hands of a federal agent, Jonathan Ross.”
In a statement, Minnesota attorney general Keith Ellison called Moriarty's request "unprecedented." Ellison says the federal government should already be cooperating in the probe.
“I expect and our community expects that the federal government will provide the requested information, documents, and physical items to our office by the deadline,” Moriarty added. “The federal government has been clear that they are not conducting an investigation into the death of Renee Good, but we are.”
Among the items Moriarty is demanding is all physical evidence as well as all videos and photographs recorded by federal agents.
These demands, referred to as “Touhy” letters, constitute a formal request for evidence as part of Hennepin County Attorney’s office investigation, supported by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) and the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office into Good’s death.
“The County Attorney's Office is sending these letters because the federal government continues not to do so,” Ellison said in a statement. “My office and I will keep working with the HCAO to do everything in our power to support state investigators’ efforts to conduct a complete, transparent, and impartial investigation."
Examples of the information and evidence demanded include:
- All physical evidence, such as firearms, cartridge casings, motor vehicles and uniforms.
- All videos and photographs recorded by federal agents, including those on personal devices.
- Names of all federal agents and officers involved in the shooting, on scene or who responded to the scene.
- Statements from federal agents or officers regarding the shooting.
- Medical records for agents or officers for any injury related to the shooting on January 7.
- Policies and procedures in effect on January 7, 2026.
