Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office deputies were fired upon while attempting to serve an arrest warrant in the area of West 28th Street and Nicollet Avenue in South Minneapolis Tuesday.
Initial reports suggest they are still working to negotiate with the suspect. The sheriff's department reports that deputies and the Minneapolis Police Department are currently working to secure the scene.
The suspect, an adult white male according to the sheriff's department, is not yet in custody. They say that several agencies and multiple resources, including crisis negotiations, are on scene.
The apartment building has been evacuated, but the suspect remains barricaded inside.
Roads have been closed in the area and they are asking the public to avoid the area to ensure the safety of both residents and first responders.
One man WCCO Radio spoke with said officers deployed ballistic shields, K-9 units, and tactical rifles to secure the area after a suspect reportedly resisted arrest and opened fire on officers.
"After the shots got fired, they ran downstairs, went to their squad," said the witness. "That's when they started getting assault rifles. One dude grabbed a bulletproof shield, you know, that ballistic thing. They proceed up the stairs, more shots get fired. I'm guessing because I was inside and I couldn't hear it, but I could definitely see what was going on."
The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is also confirming there are no reports of injuries at this time.
This is a developing story. More information will be released as it becomes available.
