A girls high school hockey coach is in critical condition after hitting his head on the ice in a freak accident.
44-year old Jason Jensen was running practice in Victoria Friday night when a player accidentally ran into him, knocking him to the ice. He was not wearing a helmet.
When he's not coaching, Jensen is a lieutenant with the Lakeville Police Department.
"We're used to, as first responders, responding to incidents like he was involved in," Chief Brad Paulson says. "And helping at the outset, and kind of being in that caregiver role. Ao the script has flipped a lot for our staff, to now kind of be on the other side of this with one of our own."
High school hockey coaches are not required to wear helmets during practice, though the Minnesota State High School League "highly recommends" it.
A spokesman with the high school league says he also expects the league to have discussions about it again as a result of Jensen's accident.
"He is a very selfless individual and just focuses on serving others whether it's our community in a in a police officer role, whether it's our staff in a leadership role at the police department," Paulson says about Jensen.
A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help Jensen's wife and two young kids. So far, $82,932 had been raised.
