“Anyone who’s staying in a place that’s unfit for human habitation, the prospect of being outdoors with the kind of weather that we’re expecting is potentially fatal.”

That’s Jake Gale, the senior director of operations with People Serving People, a homeless shelter in downtown Minneapolis.

They’ve seen unprecedented demand for the shelter in recent months as the foreclosure moratorium has ended and high demand is expected again with Minnesota’s very cold weather.

Hennepin County officials say there are plenty of beds available throughout the county.

“The family shelter team, the adult shelter connect, and we really try to get as many people as we can,” says Danielle Werder is the area manager for the county’s office to end homelessness.

Her team has been doing outreach to get as many people in as possible. They’ve added more space for the winter and now have shelters open 24 hours a day to ensure everyone has access no matter the day or time.

Hennepin County has a list of available shelters on their website here. Besides providing a bed, many help provide a meal as well.
