Authorities say a federal agent who was struck by a moving car driven by an alleged undocumented immigrant on St. Paul's east side responded by firing his weapon twice at the vehicle.

It happened Sunday morning on the 1300 block of Westminster Street, not far from the on-ramp to 35E from Maryland Avenue, the Department of Homeland Security said.

There were no injuries from the gunfire but the agent reportedly received medical attention.

A second agent who was also hit by the vehicle was also taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to federal officials.

Homeland Security officials say the driver of the car from Cuba was non-compliant during a traffic stop. He was eventually taken into custody.

The man also bit an ICE agent as officers subdued him outside his apartment in St. Paul after he tried to flee on foot, Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in an email to the Associated Press.

The man wasn't hurt, and the injuries received by the agents struck by the SUV were not life-threatening, though he and the agents were taken to the hospital for evaluation, McLaughlin said.

Tensions have been rising in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area as federal authorities continue an immigration crackdown. Last week, ICE agents and protesters clashed in neighboring Minneapolis.

McLaughlin said the man detained Sunday entered the U.S. in 2024 through a now-discontinued program implemented by former President Joe Biden's administration allowing migrants without proper entry papers into the country while their claims for asylum were reviewed.
