The executive director of the Minnesota State High School League says they continue to look into recent acts of racism connected to high school sports in the Twin Cities metro.

Erich Martens told WCCO radio that what's needed is to place an equal amount of importance on supporting and repairing any damage that may be out there.

"We have many who are highly impacted by these behaviors," he said. "We need to provide care and support for those individuals."

This comes as racist incidents at several basketball and hockey games have led to coach resignations and cancelation of events.

"My work with all of the schools that have been part of this have focused on both of those sides," he said. "How is this happening, and what are the actions taken there.

The high school league outlined initiatives to combat racism, and Martens said including students is a key component moving forward.

"The voice of our students is very important and powerful," he said. "If we work with them, we can all make a better impact. It takes everybody from school boards to superintendents to principals to coaches, athletic directors, to try and make sure our students are safe, treated appropriately, and given the opportunity to participate."
