Twelve jurors and six alternates were seated Thursday in what became the first and only day of jury selection in the federal civil rights trial of three former Minneapolis police officers who are accused of helping Derek Chauvin kill George Floyd in May 2020.
J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao are all accused of depriving Floyd of his constitutional rights by failing to step-in and intervene as Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck.
Juror were selected by U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson and were selected based on a questionnaire sent randomly to Minnesotans last year.
According to pool reporters placed inside the court room, the 12 main jurors are five white men, six white women, and one woman appeared to be Asian. Three white woman, two white men, and one man who appeared to be Asian makeup the alternates.
A trial management meeting is set for Friday and is a sealed meeting to review what evidence will, or will not, be admitted.
Opening statements are set for 10 a.m. Monday.
