Jury selections started Monday in Minnesota’s trial against e-cigarette maker Juul Labs and Altria as the state looks to obtain millions in damages.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is expected to give an opening statement in Hennepin County District Court as the state's lawsuit seeks more than $100 million in damages.
Hamline Law Professor David Schultz says the state is claiming Juul deceptively tricked and lured kids into using its product despite their being health risks.
The state also claims Juul discouraged vendors from checking the age requirements for purchases, but Schultz said that’s not all.
“Juul did not disclose, or misrepresented, the health effects of their vaping product, trying to bill it as a safe alternative to tobacco,” Schultz shared.
The lawsuit was filed in December 2019, with Ellison seeing it as a continuation of the state’s landmark $6.5 billion settlement with Big Tobacco more than two decades prior.
