U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, who is running for Governor in Minnesota as a Democrat, could soon pick her running mate.

WCCO Radio political analyst Blois Olson says Klobuchar will be deciding between a slightly more progressive name on the ticket, and someone who can connect her with more rural areas of the state.

"The one name that is consistent, is Ag Commissioner Thom Petersen," Olson notes. "She's very close to him, he'd be a trusted choice. I would say he's the safest choice for her, and we know Sen. Klobuchar has been known to go the safe route."

Talking to Vineeta Sawkar on the WCCO Morning News, Olson thinks an announcement could come in the next two to three days.

"I think there's a balance between somebody that can help her in rural Minnesota, and then somebody to maybe be a little more progressive," Olson says. "You know, she's positioned herself as more moderate, she is more moderate, and do delegates, and do DFL'ers need the energy?"

The pick comes as the state DFL Party is preparing for the State Convention, which will be held at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester Friday, May 29 through Sunday, May 31, 2026.

The Republican State Convention is also this coming weekend, May 29-30, in Duluth. There, the three frontrunning GOP candidates for governor will seek the party's endorsement, House Speaker Lisa Demuth, Minnesota businessman Kendall Qualls, and MyPillow founder and CEO Mike Lindell.
