A Chicago man was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday morning in Hennepin County court in the road-rage shooting death of a Minnesota man last summer.
Jamal Smith had been convicted for killing Jay Boughton, who was driving with his teenaged son on highway 169 near Plymouth when the confrontation happened July 6, 2021.
It was nearly two months later when Smith was arrested in Decatur, Illinois, about 200 miles out of Chicago.
Smith was found guilty of three charges, including murder.
The sentencing came following emotional victim impact statements from Boughton's family members.
After Tuesday morning's hearing, family of Boughton and their supporters spoke to reporters about the life sentence for the coach's killer.
He will be eligible for parole in 30 years.
