The Brooklyn Park Police Department released information Monday about a shooting at the Twin Cities Corn Maze in Brooklyn Park. Initial information provided to responding officers indicated that a man may have “accidently shot himself while attending the event”.
Officers arrived on scene and located the victim who was a 38-year-old male. The victim was able to meet officers at the entrance to the festival and medical aid was provided. The victim suffered an upper leg injury and was transported to a nearby hospital.
According to responding police, the victim had a valid permit to carry and was legally carrying the firearm. Officers interviewed several witnesses who gave similar accounts of the incident.
The Star Tribune is reporting that the man, who is from Circle Pines, called 9-1-1 to report the shooting. The owner of the maze also told the Star Tribune they do allow firearms for those permitted to carry.
According to witnesses, the victim had been near the corn pit prior to the incident. The victim was “bending over at the waist and was removing corn from his boot” when the firearm he was carrying discharged into his upper leg. The victim had been carrying the firearm on his hip.
Investigators are currently working to determine what caused the firearm to discharge.
No other injuries or property damage was reported. The festival resumed normal operation after the incident.
