No one was hurt in a police standoff that lasted until early this morning in Minneapolis that resulted in the arrest of a man accused of shooting his neighbor.

54-year-old John Sawchack was arrested without incident around 1:30 a.m. on Monday after numerous attempts to contact him inside a home near the intersection of 35th St. and Grand Ave.

Police say Sawchack had been holed up for days in the house, and they stepped up their efforts late Sunday.

There were dozens of officers and SWAT team members at the scene along with crisis negotiators.

Police has been called to that home more than a dozen times in the past on incidents ranging from vandalism to physical assault.

Some city leaders were critical of the MPD of taking so long to make an arrest.

In an early-morning press conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey pointed out how the police department is doing all it can despite being understaffed and short on resources.

"To those who are saying that our chief or our officers have been making excuses, I say (MPD officers) are the ones who have been stepping up every single day to protect and serve," said Frey. "I'm proud to work with them."

MPD chief Brian O'Hara apologized for the delay to arrest Sawchuck.

"That should not have happened," he said.

The man who was shot, Davis Maturi, was released from the hospital on Sunday.

He's suffering from a fractured spine, two broken ribs, and a concussion.
