Suspect shooting at police hit with cop car in Mounds View

Witnesses say the suspect began shooting at the vehicle

An altercation between law enforcement in Mounds View and a man walking on the sidewalk allegedly ended with police ramming the man into a fence.

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Department released a statement saying that at approximately 10:40 a.m., police were called because the suspect, who has not yet been named, was discharging a weapon in the Mounds View neighborhood.

Authorities caught up with the man near the intersection of Mounds View Blvd and County Road Highway 2 when he reportedly discharged a firearm at both a Mounds View police squad car, hitting just above the driver's side windshield, and a deputy's squad car, striking just below the driver's side windshield.

The bullets missed both officers, but the deputy who was fired upon used his vehicle to stop the threat because he "feared for his life." The suspect was hit by the squad car and sent through one house's fence and into the backyard.

Lexi Imholte, a college freshman and resident of the home where the suspect was hit, saw the aftermath.

"There was quite a bit of blood on his face," Imholte said. "I thought that he got shot in the head because of how much blood was on him."

Before seeing the suspect in her backyard and the destruction that had happened to her fence, she reported hearing gunshots. Her mother responded, "are the dogs inside?"

After getting her animals and going to her mother's bedroom, she looked out the window and saw what had happened.

"He was on the ground, and then a whole bunch of cops came. They were just trying to put a neck brace on him and get him medical treatment," Imholte said.

Imholte said that after the suspect was hit she didn't see him move much. She added that her mom has seen him before around the neighborhood.

"He was moving a bit but not trying to fight or anything, just trying to receive that medical help," she added.

The suspect was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment; his condition is not known at this time.

The Mounds View Police Department and the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office will be conducting criminal investigations into the domestic assault, and the two attempted homicides of the officers. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently investigating the officer-involved use of force.
