Metro Transit is gearing up for a busy weekend in Minneapolis.
Friday night, Paul McCartney will be performing at U.S. Bank Stadium around the same time that the Golden Gophers kickoff a home game at Huntington Bank Stadium against Nebraska, less than two miles away.
And on Sunday, the Vikings face the Eagles at U.S. Bank stadium bringing thousands to downtown once again.
Metro Transit CEO Brian Funk says to prepare they've made adjustments to routes in and out of busy areas.
"We'll have extra frequent trains that are taking care of fans leaving after the event, and then we'll do something similar over at U.S. Bank Stadium after the concert," says Funk. "Even though the service says that it ends at 11:30, if people know that they come out of the stadium as soon as the show is over, get in line, we'll make sure that we have a train to get you where you're going."
Funk says light rail trains will also be equipped with extra cars to accommodate more passengers than usual.
"We'll be adding capacity to the system so we have longer trains," he explains. "Normally we have two car trains. In this case we'll have three of those cars coupled together. So we'll have a lot of capacity on the system plus some extras for the end of the events."
Trains are expected to run for at least an hour after the show at U.S. Bank Stadium Friday night, and some select buses will run though 1:00 a.m. for those fans that stick around downtown a little later.
