38 percent of Minnesota's COVID-19 cases are from unknown community sources according to the Minnesota Department of Health.
MDH on Tuesday reported four more deaths from COVID-19 and 954 lab-confirmed cases. In total, COVID-19 has caused 2,087 deaths and 105,740 infections in Minnesota.
Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy Dr. Michael Osterholm at the University of Minnesota called the amount of cases from unknown community sources "troubling."
"This really tells us the people aren't understanding when they're in public places and public spaces that they are in fact breathing in the air of someone else who's infected and exhaled the virus out," Osterholm told WCCO Radio's Dave Lee during the Wednesday morning news.
The numbers reiterate the call to wear face masks and physically distance when in public.
"It's one thing to know I was in contact with someone who's potentially infectious," Osterholm said. "But if I'm just living as I think I'm living it in a safe way and suddenly I get infected...wow, what does that mean?"
MDH officials will provide a statewide COVID-19 update Wednesday at 2 p.m.
