Today is June 1 and that means it's the start of Pride Month, dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride. To mark the occasion a new LGBTQ exhibit is opening at the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis.
"Going Out Coming In" is the new walk through experience at the museum and it opens Thursday. The exhibit offers a look into the history of major landmarks and events for the LGBTQ community in Minneapolis.
The Minnesota Historical Society spent years mapping locations of significant LGBTQ sites in the city. Research historian for the exhibit Noah Barth says the exhibit will examine several aspects of the LGBTQ movement in Minnesota.
“But we wanted to talk about things like politics and community, organizing, or finding romantic lovers or friends or finding your identity through those sites,” says Barth.
The exhibit will include photos, news clippings, and videos of historic LGBTQ figures and events. Barth says there's something for everyone.

“I want everybody to understand that queer history is very long and we've been here for a very long time even if we didn't know about it,” says Barth. “For queer people, I want them to see themselves represented in the landscape of the city.
Barth says the exhibit’s goal is to take visitors back in time to places and events that held importance to the community.
The exhibit is open June 1 through October 8.
