Four people including a child/teenager were hospitalized after a three-alarm fire tore through a four-story apartment building Tuesday night in Minneapolis' Elliot Park Neighborhood.

Minneapolis Fire found heavy black smoke coming from the third floor of the apartment building as they responded to a call at 9:42 p.m. Tuesday at 15011 11th Avenue South. Fire crews used 40-foot ladders to rescue several residents who were hanging out of their apartment window in the rear of the building.

Those fire crews had to exit the building and change to an exterior attack according Minneapolis Fire PIO, Melanie Rucker, who wrote in a press release that there were fears about a possible roof collapse.

Three residents including a child/teenager were hospitalized with burn injuries while a fourth adult was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Two firefighters were medically evaluated for overexertion and released.

A dog was rescued and given oxygen before being returned to their owner.

Approximately 30 residents were given temporary shelter inside two Metro Transit buses and the Red Cross is assisting them.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
