Minneapolis City Council members seem to be leaning into a third option for what to do with the 3rd precinct, three years after it was destroyed during the unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd.

The council heard details on a survey of residents that showed resistance to two plans to keep a precinct near where the other stood at Lake and Minnehaha.

Those surveyed were not asked about the third option, which would move the precinct to Century Plaza near the Convention Center.

Council member LaTrisha Vetaw responded to the news that the third option wasn’t provided in the survey, sharing criticism for Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

“It’s very clear, as a result of this process, we’ve doubled down on a harm that we’ve already created for so many working-class people in our city, especially as it relates to public safety and specifically policing,” Vetaw said. “And it’s unfortunate that Mayor Frey’s administration thought they could manufacture consent around something our residents have advocated against for quite some time.”

The project is emotionally charged, with some residents saying they don’t even want brick-and-mortar physical presence in the 3rd precinct, adding that they need more time to heal following the police murder of George Floyd.

But Minneapolis Public Safety Commissioner Cedric Alexander says both need to happen simultaneously.

“We have to be able to help people in this community…and at the same time, we have to think, what do we want our public safety to look like going forward,” Alexander said.

Members yesterday voted unanimously to move the measure forward with a full council vote expected tomorrow.
