A controversial homeless encampment in Minneapolis won't be shut down on Tuesday as expected.
Minneapolis city officials announced Friday they need at least two more weeks to find places to live for people now staying at Camp Nenookaasi in the Phillips neighborhood.
The reason for the closure is to address ongoing public health and safety issues.
There was a fatal shooting at the encampment this past Tuesday, and investigators say it was done in self-defense.
Homeless advocates say shutting down the camp is a step backwards, because many of the 180 people living there will lose items essential to finding a place to live.
There are reports that 74 people who were in the camp at one time have found housing.
Of those, 52 are scheduled to move into housing in the coming days and 33 decided to go to treatment.
People living in the neighborhood surrounding the encampment have lodged dozens of complaints to authorities.
Records show there have been near 90 police calls to the camp.,
