The skies may not all be purple. But, there will be people running everywhere and partying like it's 1999 in the Twin Cities this weekend as part of Prince Celebration Week.
Included in the fun is a 12-song sing-a-long that will attempt to shake the ground according to Ben Johnson, arts and cultural affairs director for the city of Minneapolis.
"And actually, the event was inspired by an event that happens in Europe, which is in Estonia, which is also a choral culture. And we're choral culture," Johnson explains. "It's called the Song Fields, and every five-years, a million people show up in these ancient valleys and sing these ancient songs and the ground shakes."
There will also be something special included in the set list.
"As we mark his birthday and his memorial, we are working on our own version of Happy Birthday that's very Prince-inspired," says Johnson. "So you have to come here to hear that version of Happy Birthday."
They'll also sing "Nothing Compares 2 U" as a tribute to the people of Minneapolis.
"Prince is such an icon for us as a city and as a state," says Johnson. "So, I just felt we needed to do something to amplify that. And so the best thing I thought we could possibly do, was just have an all come, 15,000 people singing in the streets of Minneapolis, 12 songs and let the ground shake."
The sing-along will take place near the Prince mural on 1st Avenue and 9th Street from 4:30 to 6:30 Saturday.
The celebration continues Friday night with a concert at The Armory featuring Prince's legendary bands, The Revolution and New Power Generation.
