Want to spruce up your property? Minneapolis residents can now purchase trees during the city's annual tree sale.

"Residents citywide can order a low cost $30 tree," City Trees Manager Sydney Schaaf explains. "They can get up to three trees per planting address and then they will pick them up at our distribution weekend. And we give them all the information they need to plant the trees."

There are also two designated environmental justice areas.

"For those residents, where we really, really, really have low levels of tree cover and we're really trying to push to do more, we will do free tree planting for residents in that area," says Schaaf.

There is a commercial canopy program as well.

The City Trees Sale program began in 2006 to increase tree canopy in the city and the benefits of having more trees are many says Schaaf.

"They can reduce your heating and air conditioning bills because large shade trees shade your home," she says. "And then your air conditioning will kick on less. They also provide screening from wind in the winter, so it can lower your heating bills as well. They have been shown to increase property value. They provide habitat for wildlife."

This program is funded by the City of Minneapolis and trees must be planted within Minneapolis city limits. Residents have until September 10th to purchase the trees and trees will be available for pick-up on September 26 and September 27.
