Minneapolis public school officials are keeping an eye on the end of "Operation Metro Surge" and what it means for students returning to the classroom.
Last week, the district extended its online learning option to April 6. Minneapolis School Board chair Collin Beachy explained why.
"We are still feeling the effects as we said. But, listen, our message is simple to everyone here. You are all welcome and you will be safe coming back to school," Beachy said.
The temporary online learning option had been scheduled to end Thursday of this week.
The district says any decision to end the online learning option would come with a two week notice for students and parents.
But Beachy says they'll continue monitoring the situation on the ground, which will influence decisions to bring students back into classrooms.
"For those people, I don't have a date," said Beachy. "This news obviously just came yesterday, right? So, but we will be thinking about when it is going to be safe to start bringing our students back to school, and that's just going to have to have a lot of coordination with our families because this is going to have long term effects."
