The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is getting a big boost from the new state budget passed by lawmakers as the state’s legislative session came to an end.

Commissioner Sarah Strommen shared with News Talk 830 WCCO’s Adam Carter that Minnesotans will notice a difference in the improvements they’ll be able to make.

“Really, I think, Minnesotans, whatever your flavor of outdoor experience is, there is something in this budget that will help us modernize and enhance that experience,” Strommen said.

Strommen says a lot of the DNR’s infrastructure — from state park buildings to fish hatcheries — is 60 to 90 years old.

With the new funds, the commissioner says they will be able to modernize everything from boating access to camping throughout the state.

The new budget includes more than $287 million, which officials say will be used to better connect people to the outdoors and manage the state’s natural resources.

Strommen says that the bust in funding is a “once-in-a-lifetime” investment.
