Though many people with flexible work schedules hit the road Thursday, Friday is going to be another busy one out on the roads as folks get away for the long weekend.
With that, public safety officials are stressing extra caution. Shannon Grabow is with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and warns people to be safe.
“The 100 days from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day has a dangerous reputation,” Grabow explains. “We've used phrases like the 100 deadliest days, or the 100 most traveled day. Of the 444 deaths that occurred in 2022, 169 of those occurred during that 100 day stretch.”
Grabow says that's 38% of all fatal accidents for the year. She reminds drivers of the simple basics to staying safe on the roads.
“We can't educate or enforce our way out of these deadly crashes, and ironically, we already know the basic fundamentals of driving,” Grabow told WCCO. “Pay attention, drive sober, buckle up, and attention to posted speeds.
Extra law enforcement will be out on the roads all weekend looking for speeders, and distracted or impaired drivers.
