High school graduation rates appear to be bouncing back following the pandemic, as a new report found that 83.6% of seniors graduating in 2022 did so in four years, just shy of 2019’s pre-pandemic number.

The data comes from the Minnesota Report Card, which highlighted that even with the statewide increase in graduation rates over the last two years, the inner cities continue to struggle.

The report card shows that just 76.7% percent of Minneapolis students and 75.3% of St. Paul students graduated high school on time.

State Education Commissioner Willie Jett joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Vineeta Sawkar to discuss both districts and the tough work they are doing to turn things around.

When it comes to working with students to help them get across the finish line and prepare for life post-high school, Jett says he can see both districts are doing “All that they can do and will continue to do even more.”

“They are putting in all that extra support for students,” Jett said. “They’re working with families.”

Jett says that helping students find direction into where they want to go post-graduation is big a part of getting them to finish their high school careers.

“Having students find who they are and what their passion is … puts that emphasis on graduation,” Jett said.

The report also shows graduation rates statewide for American Indian, Black, and students who identify as two or more races increased significantly.
