A Minnesota man kicks off a 43-day journey Friday, biking from Key West, Florida to Minnesota.
Al Reszel of Richmond rides in support of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and his wife, Terry, a breast cancer survivor. Reszel says he trains all year so he can ride roughly 90 miles a day. In total, the trip is around 3,500 miles.
“During the summer, you know, I ride 300 or 400 miles a week outside, mix in a 90, 100 mile ride here and there,” says Reszel. “Since October I’ve been riding inside. I put my bike on a trainer. I ride about an hour and a half, two hours inside, about six days a week.”
Reszel has done five other long routes before this one, raising around $52,000 so far. He says it's a long ride, but doable as long as you're prepared.
“You do have to be ready,” explains Reszel. “You do cut a tire now and then, a chain might break. Hasn’t happened in a few rides. You usually go through a lot of inner tubes. I usually end up with six or seven flats a ride.”
