The Minnesota State Patrol is introducing six new K9s to the force.

Sgt. Chad Mills says through several weeks of training the dogs learn to detect a variety of drugs excluding Marijuana.

"New dogs that we train are on heroine, cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy," says Mills. "Then fentanyl, we haven't them trained on fentanyl, we're kind of in the process of whether we'll do that."

The new recruits include Charlie, Tajga, Robbie, Johhny, Alex and Bolo who Sgt. Mills says are a huge asset for state patrol.

"Most of the stuff they're smelling we can't smell," Mills explains. "They have dogs that can detect cancer cells, COVID-19. So it's millions of times better than us. They're a great tool."

All the dogs are expected to finish their training by mid-November.
