The body of the missing 2-and-a-half-year-old from Edina has been recovered by Edina Police on Tuesday afternoon in the Roseland Park area. The little girl went missing almost 18 hours before police recovered her body.
On Monday, Iklas Abdullahi Ahmed went missing around 5 p.m. near Lake Cornelia in Roseland Park. Police shared that it is believed she wandered off on her own.
"On behalf of the City, I want to send our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers to the family and loved ones of this young girl," Edina Police Chief Todd Milburn said in a press release. "Our hearts go out to all those affected by this devastating tragedy.
Shortly after 1 p.m., the girl's body was discovered by members of the Hennepin County Water Rescue team in water adjacent to Roseland Park.
More than 150 people worked in the effort to find the 2-and-a-half-year-old, including police and fire crews from eight different cities.
"We are appreciative of all those who aided in this search, including our law enforcement and fire and rescue partners as well as those in the surrounding areas," Milburn said.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner will release additional details about the girl's death at a later time, police said. The Edina Police investigation is ongoing.
