MnDOT warns drivers to slow down or face steep fines in work zones

It is National Work Zone Awareness Week, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to use extra caution as the road construction season ramps up.

MnDOT spokeswoman Anne Meyer says a good rule of thumb is "know before you go."

“Check out your route before you get behind the wheel so you can anticipate where there might be some slowdowns due to construction or maintenance work happening,” Meyer told WCCO. “Whenever we’re out there doing construction there can be lane closures, lane shifts, uneven lane surfaces, and those are all things we want drivers to be aware of.”

The fine for speeding in a work zone in Minnesota is $300.

Meyer says they are reminding drivers to check their routes ahead of time and slow down to posted work zone speed limits. She says that applies even if you might not see a lot of activity in a work zone.

“It’s still important to keep that area secure and keep that area safe whenever they may need it," says Meyer. "Even if you don’t see workers there, it doesn’t mean that work isn’t important and we have to keep those workers safe.”

More than 230 road construction projects are planned across the state this spring and summer.
