Minnesota's 64-year old muskie record has in all likelihood been broken.
Nolan Sprengeler, 27, of Plymouth landed a Mille Lacs monster Monday night. The fish tipped the scales at 55.14 pounds, and measured 57.75 inches.
It took until Tuesday for Sprengeler to get the fish weighed on a certified scale, which he was able to do at a UPS store in Golden Valley.
"So ridiculous. So outrageous," Sprengeler said of the scene bringing in the massive fish to the UPS store while other customers looked on. "We strolled in, put it on the scale."
Sprengeler told WCCO's Adam Carter that a friend, and a UPS employee served as official witnesses so that the measurements can be certified and the fish can be declared a Minnesota record.
Sprengeler wanted to release the fish, but he says the muskie was hooked too deep. Now, a taxidermist from Wisconsin who specializes in muskie mounts will preserve the fish.
The Minnesota DNR will have to certify the catch as a state record, which would break the previous record of 54 pounds set in 1957.
