Hundreds attended a public memorial service for Fargo police officer Jake Wallin in Fargo Wednesday afternoon.
Wallin was killed in the line of duty earlier this month during a traffic stop. The suspect was shot and killed by another Fargo officer.
Former North Dakota U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp addressed the crowd.
"We wish to express our sincere sympathy to the family for their sacrifice," said Heitkamp. "But we want them to know by this expression, that they do not grieve this loss alone."
Wallin had been with the Fargo Police Department only since April before being killed July 14 when a man armed with 1,800 rounds of ammunition, multiple guns and explosives ambushed officers responding to a routine traffic crash. Two other officers and a civilian were wounded before a fourth officer returned fire, killing gunman Mohamad Barakat.
Police said the actions of the fourth officer likely spared the city a bigger, bloodier attack.
