Minnesota High School League state tournaments in golf, lacrosse, and baseball are getting an extra dose of warm weather on Tuesday with temperatures in the 90s and heat indexes well over 100.

Morning tee times for the boys state golf tournament started at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday with the first tee times in the girls tournament slated for 12:00 p.m.

Lacrosse and baseball were all scheduled to get underway around 10 a.m. on Tuesday and play into the afternoon.

"We encourage our coaches to work very carefully with our student athletes and just have them be as prepared as they can with enough water and those kinds of things," said MSHSL Executive Director Erich Martens.

Martens said that each site is asked to prepare for extreme conditions such as Tuesday's heat. The girls and boys state golf tournament is played at three different golf courses including Bunker Hills, Ridges at Sand Creek, and Pebble Creek.

Stillwater and Roseville Area High Schools are hosting the state lacrosse tournament.

"We work with each one of those locations to have the water at the course or at the game," Martens said. "Things like shaded dugouts or shaded benches for lacrosse are important. We also make sure to take the breaks when we need to and obviously lacrosse is the highest exertion of the events we have going on Tuesday, so we are very thoughtful there."

Athletic trainers at each site keep an eye out for athletes, coaches, officials, and fans who may be experience heat related symptoms.

"As we get to this point, we just haven't had that many warm days so far this year so we're very thoughtful about that," he added. "We're still on schedule at all of our sites, but we will continue to monitor that."
