With winter arriving in Minnesota, the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport has announced that its runways are closing due to low visibility and snowfall rates.

Jeff Lea with the Metropolitan Airports Commission shared that with current weather projections, the runways should get back up and running shortly.

“With the heavy band of snow that we have experienced since 1:45 p.m., we just couldn’t keep those levels,” Lea said. “We’ll continue to monitor all runways and then play that out and hopefully get operations going again as early as 4 p.m. if the current projections hold for the weather forecasts.”

Lea said that they will start reopening runways when the weather clears, and it is again safe to do so, but until then, operations will remain closed.

“There’s continued operations. It's just trying to get it to the appropriate and very safe levels for air traffic to maneuver on the runways,” Lea said.
