It was two years ago today that a beloved baseball coach from the Twin Cities was shot and killed during a road rage incident on Highway 169.
Jay Boughton was driving home from a game with his teenage son when the driver of an SUV shot at him, causing a crash. Boughton died at the hospital.
His widow Kristen is marking the somber date by having a billboard put up near the spot where it happened.
"So, it has a nice picture of Jay facing out, looking towards a baseball field and he's in his baseball uniform," says Kristin Boughton. "It has a message, a powerful message, that says 'Stay in the light: In Memory of Jay Bouton, 7/6/2021.'"
The billboard is on Southbound 169 and Bass Lake Road. Kristin says the T represents several things.
"The T in light represents hope," she explains. "It represents faith. It represents peace. It represents empathy. It represents love. It represents kindness. So that is important in this message."
Kristen says she hopes people see the message, and remember to be kind to one another.
"It's a sad day without Jay, but I believe our family has been humbled by such sadness," Kristin told WCCO's Susie Jones. "And this message is so powerful because through our tragedy, there's hope, and the hope is light. And my hope is that others see this message and spread that light, that kindness, that empathy, that peace to others today and always."
She is currently working on legislation to help families who have gone through similar situations and is training to be a homicide advocate.
