Another positive story is blossoming from the chaos that erupted at 38th and Chicago in Minneapolis three years ago this weekend as community members continue to find ways to give back.

People Incorporated is buying a Victorian-style home in the neighborhood to serve as a short and long-term mental health center for both people in crisis.

Spokeswoman Jill Wiedemann-West says choosing a site near George Floyd Square was deliberate.

“I think being in that neighborhood, in particular, carries with it a very large imperative for us to do our very best work, not just as providers of services, but as community members and neighbors,” Wiedemann-West said.

Wiedemann-West shared that the need for services like this in the area still remains three years after Floyd’s death created a ripple effect in the community.

“It was a life-changing situation that occurred that created fingerprints all over the place,” Wiedemann-West said. “I think the imperative for us, bringing healing services there, is quite important. Not just the neighborhood but also, I think our communities in general right now are in desperate need of a lot of healing.”

The 13-bed home is expected to open in October and begin offering services to those in need.
