Minnesota's new state flag took another step towards becoming reality Tuesday as the State Emblems Redesign Commission narrowed the field of
options down to three.

The final three options, shown above, are far from "final" as the next step is for graphic designers to create additional mockups of the designs based on the modifications discussed by the Commission Tuesday evening.
The commission adopted the new state seal Tuesday only after making a few adjustments. Those adjustments included changing the color of the loon's eye to red, not including the year of statehood (1858), and removing the motto L'etoile du Nord.
Commission members approved adding Mni Sóta Makoc̣e, which is the Dakota word for which the state gets its name. It translates to "Land where the waters reflect the sky” in Dakota.

The commission is set to meet again on Friday with the hope of picking the new flag.
