A new state program sets out to benefit taxpayers and affordable housing projects.

The new State Housing Tax Credit Program Fund trades investments in low-income housing projects for a state tax credit of 85% of the donation.

One such project is The Wilder Square program in Saint Paul.

Developer Cecile Bedor says the funds are helping them renovate their property and keep it afloat.

"But we're using this tax credit to write down that mortgage, and we're really excited because we've got about a $1.5 to $1.75 million donated already to help us do that," explained Bedor.

The program is entirely funded from eligible taxpayer contributions, the deadline to donate is December 13.

"This is an opportunity for people across Minnesota to help us put 150 homes on that site," said Habitat for Humanity Twin Cities Executive Director Chris Coleman. "It's not just about homes. These are never about buildings. These are about people. These are about families. These are about children."
