Agents with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead late Monday night in Paynesville.

It happened after officers from multiple agencies including the Paynesville Police Department responded to a domestic dispute involving a man and a woman on the 600 block of Stearns Avenue. Officers worked to get a woman out of the home safely after learning a man inside was armed with a gun. That woman told police that she had been assaulted and suffered head and neck injuries.

Police worked to make contact with the male suspect who locked himself inside the home's basement. At one point, as officers tried to take the man into custody, shots were fired and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

A gun was recovered by police who were wearing body cameras during the incident.

So far, investigators have not identified the suspect or any of the officers involved.
