Osseo's City council is seeking approval to open a municipally run marijuana retailer.

City leaders are exploring the idea of housing a shop in a potential brand new City Hall and Public Safety building.

Unlike some states, Minnesota’s cannabis laws specifically allow municipalities to open their own marijuana retail shops.

Osseo City Administrator Riley Grams says he hopes it can be a way to boost revenue for the city.

" In a time where the costs of providing high quality city services to our residents and citizens continues to go up and up each and every year," Grams says. "We've been looking at potential other creative revenue streams, to help offset our budget increases and legal municipal cannabis sale certainly fit that profile."

While some local governments took the time to press pause on cannabis businesses by passing temporary bans, Grams says he hopes they can set an example and be among the first to open in the Twin Cities next year.

He says the city is waiting on state legislation concerning licenses, but products could be available as soon as April 2025.
