Minneapolis Police were on the scene of a shooting at 29th and Lyndale Avenue South Tuesday afternoon. That initial "active shooter" situation turned into a manhunt that stretched into western Minnesota.
Residents in the south Minneapolis Lyn-Lake neighborhood described a tense scene where a man on the sixth floor of the Lime Apartment building apparently opened up his patio, fired off six to eight shots at someone down below on the street.
A white vehicle then drove away and the shooter went back inside the apartment. With police and SWAT teams are in the area patrolling the area with weapons out in anticipation of any other gunfire.
Minneapolis police officers located two victims at the scene who were shot at, but not struck. One was the shooter's ex-girlfriend and her current boyfriend. They shared a child who they were told was at a daycare. Law enforcement locked down the daycare and secured child who is safe.
Negotiators were on the phone with the suspect while he was fleeing the city.
"Our officers did everything that they could but it appears this person was homicidal and they did everything they could," said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara.
Chief O'Hara says it appears "tragic crimes" appeared to have been committed outside the city in western counties but he did not have specific information on those crimes and didn't comment on those.
Reports surfaced later Tuesday afternoon that the man had fled the scene and heading west of the city. Alerts were sent to counties west of Minneapolis when it appeared the suspect was on the move.
"Negotiators were on the phone to get this person to peacefully surrender. He is alive and in custody. Other crimes occurred before that happened," O'Hara confirms.
The man, who has not been identified, is in custody according to O'Hara. WCCO Radio has also reached out to the Kandiyohi Sheriff's Department for further clarification on the crimes committed outside the city but has not yet been given those details.
This is a developing story. Stay with WCCO for more information. (NOTE: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified the apartment building as the Blue Lux Apartments)
